Geopolitics plays a significant role on bilateral/multilateral economic relationships, therefore it was encouraging to hear President Joko Widodo's opening speech at the ASEAN-Indo-Pacific Forum (AIPF) 2023, where he urged ASEAN and Indo-Pacific leaders to develop the habit of cooperation with a win-win formula without isolating any parties and announced 93 collaborative projects worth USD38.2 billion and 73 potential projects worth USD17.8 billion.
A similar message was echoed on the second day as the Prime Minister of Australia Anthony Albanese launched Australia's Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040 report and emphasised during his speech the centrality of ASEAN to Australia and the shared belief in the region's potential. Australia was well-represented at the forum, with prominent speakers including Glenn Keys of Aspen Medical and Tim Anderson of SunCable, speaking on one of AIPF's main agendas, green infrastructure and a resilient supply chain.
And a privilege to have Nicholas Moore AO, Australia's Special Envoy for Southeast Asia brief us and other leaders of Australian government and industry bodies on Australia's Southeast Asia Economic Strategy 2040, while discussing areas of cooperations.
